So for my seventeenth birthday , I held a murder mystery hawaiian luau themed party. It was called a Lethal Luau. 
Decoration : D Dollar stores came in handy for this one, that and second hand stores. 
It turned out pretty well, as host you don't really get to enjoy your party, rather you're busy making sure everyone else is enjoying it themselves. 
I thought I did a pretty good job, and I think it turned out pretty well, some people tried harder than others being in character, some dressed more hawaiian, but it was great. 
So pretty much everyone was assigned a character role, and they had to stay in that role the whole evening, we had rounds spread out the night, and with each round everyone received two clues, one they were susposed to share, and one they were supposed to conceal. You then went around mingling with people, to gain certain information and carry out hidden tasks. 
For example, my friend Emily, or Lei donalot, was a " lady of the night" and she had to secretly entice as many people as she could to accompany her in the other room for some personal time together.
After that, my character died and they all had to figure out who did it. In the end everyone came up with some pretty interesting stories and I was impressed.
