Pteridomania

I haven't even thought of using a blog in a long time. But with the purchase of a boathouse, and the upgrade of having  a million times more space than a 32ft boat, a new obsession of mine has been released. House plants. House plants everywhere. It started out innocent enough, we had plants on the boat, we grew our own mint and basil for drinks, and I always filled the space with fresh flower, and there was a succulent or cacti brought home for me from the boyfriend, and a snake plant hidden somewhere. So I probably had about eight plants all together at the most, and I was totally content that the space was filled. And then we moved. And then there were so many empty spaces, and so much light, and so many possibilities.

I think some of our first roommates included my huuge fern, I have always wanted a massive fern. Ferns are the only thing for me that Alberta is lacking, and my favorite reason to be outside. All of the freaking BC ferns.
Then I remember there were two days in a row at work right before my birthday where I picked up a hanging plant on my lunch break and left it on the desk, then my birthday came and I was gifted another hanging basket. And a couple cacti and a palm from Ikea when we went bed shopping.

Then all of the sudden I have over 50 house plants. I blame this obsession to joining a bunch of Facebook plant groups that normalized having plants taking over rooms. If I see something I haven't seen before I need to have it, if leaves get broken off I need to see if I can propagate and grow a new one. This whole world of houseplants has been unleashed on me and I feel the need to document it.
I love checking back in and seeing the progress on how my plant has grown and how my indoor jungle is taking over.

Since 50 plus plants would be a lot to include in one post I am going to start off with a couple of my all time favourite plants and their stories so far.

My Prayer Plant. ( I will add  the scientific name later. ) This guy is one of my favourites for the reason that he ( most of my plants are he's to me ) closes up at night, just like in the picture. How incredible is it for a plant to show such life! He also has the most beautiful leaves, and I love how they are mauve underneath.
This guys Isn't the easiest to take care of. From my understanding he likes indirect light, Direct light has caused a couple of brown spots, lots of moisture! He gets watered at least once a week, and high humidity. He is much happier in the bathroom and he has started getting mistings. He still has a little browning along the edges but I am problem solving that to see if it is the water, I have been giving him regular tap water, so now I am trying to let the tap water sit out overnight before I use it on him.

My Fantastic Fern! Way to make me feel like I live in an old forest. This guy is huge and massive and from day one since I brought him home from the florist he has been nothing more than incredible. Everyone says that ferns are super tricky to have thrive indoors and I have had some very jealous friends when they see how big and happy this guy is. As per instruction by the floorist this guy gets soaked twice a day till he starts draining out of the bottom, that has seemed to be enough to keep him more than happy. I have started misting him once a day to try to make him even more happier. I tried epsom salt mixed in the water recently because I heard that it is a great fertilizer and I would be more than happy if this guy took over my house. It seems that the epsom salt might have browned him a little bit but nothing else bad has happened. He lives up on my fridge out of direct sunlight bug right next to a super bright window and this seems like the perfect combination for him.
